I bought a '76 240D today for $1200 Canadian ($816 US??) It's a nice car, but it suffers from tinworm in the floors and rear wheel arches. Also the beautiful MB tex is tearing on the front seats. Also, it has the automatic transmission that only changes gears when you let up on the accelerator. Other than that, everything works fine. I just have to change the oil to be safe....you never know if the previous owner has really done it recently or not. My only concern is that the car doesn't have enough power to go up the steepest hills here at the speed limit. I realize that the 4 banger has to really work hard, but I thought it would be able to take the hills at a better speed. Oh well, I'll just have to relax a bit. Great site Jamie. Keep it up.

I had someone give me a 200 Mercedes, I was looking for a donar car and found a 1978 240D behind someones house. The only thing wrong with it is no dash lights and a little body repair, but I really love this car and quit on the 200. I'm making the 240D First.

I adore my '83 240D. We bought another a week later. But the one bone I have to pick is that it runs warm. Is that normal for the engine size?

I just found your website. Nice! I have just inherited a 1979 MB 240D with 57,000+ miles on it and completely original. This car has every work order ever done on it, window sticker, and dealer info etc. Anyone have ideas on where to start with websites, books, tech manuals, etc. I also have a couple of older classic American cars so I have all the tools and knowledge to do all my work.

Nice page. I have a yellow '82 240D. Mine is cool enough to have a solid roof and crank windows, but it's an auto. Hey-i needed a car and wasn't about to wait for a stick to show up-240Ds are hard enough to get here in Denver to begin with and the price ($2k) was right. It's slow as hell, but with 217k (?--odo doesn't work right) miles on it, it's solid and reliable. I really want a manual 350SE euro, but it ain't happening anytime soon in the USA. Maybe when I move to Canada.........

Hi... it's cool to know there are other 240D enthusiasts here in New Jersey. About a year ago I was *this* close to buying a 1979 240D (stick-shift, 240k miles, mint condition) but instead I went for a 1992 VW Jetta Diesel. The VW may have a little more pep, but it's not half the car the 240D is. As soon as I can afford another car, I will settle for no less than a Mercedes 240D -- the most reliable car ever built! p.s. Do you know of a place called "Whitehouse Auto Clinic" in Whitehouse, NJ? They specialize in MB diesels and that's where I almost bought the 240D from. A greap shop with honest, friendly people. I highly recommend them to anyone in the area.

Hello, mate. Fine page you have here. I am the proud owner of a 1982 Mercedes-Benz Long Wheel Base saloon. It was a former staff car for the HRM the Queen when it was new! It is fabulous with wood trim and rear picnic tables! The car still gets 25km/gal, even with the exta weight! I will have to send you a picture sometime!I hope your car runs well for many years to come. You must come to Europe because we have many more models of Mercedes-Benz than you in the States and they are simply wonderful!

Howdy! I own a 1983 300tdt that I purchased a year and a half ago from truly "a little old lady". She was the original owner and maintained the car meticulously. I simply love this car! I've had to put a trans in it ($2000 from MB) and now I need tires. You said you use MB of Morristown... I have had a bad experience with them. Who does the work on your car?

At the intersection of Livingston Ave and Hobart Gap Road in Livingston, NJ is Carnevale's Gulf Station. Hes been our mechanic for many years and many hundreds of thousands of miles. Hes very honest and knows MB diesels. He does any work on my cars I can't do.

I bought a 1978 240d in August. The first owner ordered it without AC. He proudly showed me the sales slip which was for about $13900. Less than $14000. It runs great but I think I paid too much for it. After I bought the 1978 I traded a VW diesel for a 1980 240d. There is no doubt about that car being from the rust belt. Your cars look better than mine. I am jealous. Greg Yoder

A car without AC is rather rare! As long as you keep the car for a while and it serves you well, its hard to over pay for a 240D! Just think, you could have spend $15,000 on a econo-box! Good Luck Greg!

My uncle give to me his 240D when I finish building for brother, just before he go to Foreign Legion. It is automatic, which I bet you do not have in Mexico, Haimey. Now I am having trouble with Linux run injector pump. Help, Richarde, help. Oh, yes, you do not know me, as I am totally strange from quebecoise. Thank you for your good works! I really enjoyed your page. I'm an owner of two 5-bangers: a 1985 300D Turbo and a 1985 300TD Turbo. I drive the sedan, my wife drives the wagon. My sedan has 217K miles and the wagon is in pristine condition with 135K miles. We're both diesel heads and are looking to get 300K+ out of our cars. Once we do, we'll try to find newer diesels to keep us happy. Until then, our two W123s keep us happy. Thanks.

Hi Jaime, I see we have a quite similar taste for cars since we both own a W123 and a W108. My W123 is a 230E '84 and the W108 is a 280S '71. The W123 is the car I use daily but the W108 is my hobby restoration project (that I plan to finish next spring). I have a site devoted to the W123 at; http://www.geocities.com/SiliconValley/Pines/6633/w123.html ...and a W108 site will be up soon. Regards from Iceland, Sveinn.

Mine's a 79 240D Manual Tranny. My dad bought it new. I always told him that when he wanted to sell it, please sell it to me. Well about 4 years ago he did. It's been very dependable. It now has 318,000 miles on it. Original engine. I'm putting a new a/c compressor in it now. Many of the other a/c parts are new as well. I think I need to adjust the valves and will definitely refer to your site again. Thanks for the directions in plain English! I got a new clutch recently thanks for my leaking rear main seal. Next is the ignitors and glow plugs and then the upholstery. The padding under the MB Tex is now crunchy shredded wheat. Pretty expensive but will be worth it when I'm all done. The car also has some other minor things I'll eventually get to. All for now and thanks for the informative site. I wish more would do that. Rob

Price can vary from $2000 to over $4000. It all depends on the condition of the car and if it has service records. Be careful of anything thats a little fishy... if the car was well maintained, you'll know it by driving it.

Now thats a good looking diesel!! Jaime has not told you guys yet but we drove up to michigan in the 240. I, after about 400 miles of diesel driving, 150 miles of diesel sleeping and 550 miles of diesel riding, have come to the conclusion that this is one FINE touring sedan! So Fine in fact that jaime prefered to drive MOST (12 hrs, jaime drove about 10) of the way home. Gotta love the diesel.
Alvaro Gil <avongil@home.com>
Livingston, NJ USA - Tuesday, June 01, 1999 at 13:56:39 (PDT)

This is true! Our trip to Michigan was quite an adventure! We did get a flat tire on the way there and made half the trip on the original Conti spare! While changing it, I came very close to death as a "Wide Load" passed by. I also learned to always buy brand-name tires. I couldn't find a National tire (they didn't name that company too well) anywhere in the state! I ended up coming home on a $50 tire from some tire shop. My car also didn't respond well to the shock of different diesel fuel after I filled up at a crapy station in PA.

Hey, nice site. I'll be on the lookout for that vacuum thingy you were rambling on and on about. Didn't you say ebay has EVERYTHING? I guess it only has ALMOST everything :)

Mike, I'm still watching ebay... I'm sure it'll turn up.

Pretty cool site, Jaime. Maybe needs some banners (haha).
